YOUTH BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (BJJ)
HIGS GYM offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes for kids starting at age 4. We group the classes by ages 4-8 and then ages 9-14. Adult classes are also available for ages 15 and above.
HIGS GYM is affiliated with the world-renowned Roy Dean Academy (www.roydean.tv). Our gym practitioners have had much success in international level competitions including Coach Byron who is the purple belt gold medalist for the 2013 US Open and Gracie Worlds.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) was made famous and pioneered by the Gracie family and is a self-defense and grappling art that emphasizes position, posture and pressure to attain dominance and ultimately a submission. HIGS GYM trains and competes in both gi and no-gi BJJ.
Much like the game of chess, BJJ requires mental strategy coupled with physical ability and skill. The BJJ path is a very long and humbling one. It can take 10 years or more to become a black belt in BJJ and the minimum age is 18. As the BJJ practitioner advances in rank his knowledge of technique will increase but more importantly he will develop the sensitivity and timing needed for victory.
A typical BJJ class will cover techniques and drills from different positions but also give the students “mat time” to test their skills through live rolls. At HIGS GYM youth students start at white belt and work towards achieving four black stripes. Next will come grey belt then yellow, then orange and finally green each having four stripes earned within the belt level. When the youth student turns 16 he/she enters into the adult ranks of blue, purple, brown and finally black belt.
